    Rapidity and centrality dependence of proton and antiproton production from 197Au + 197Au collisions at √SNN = 130 GeV

    We report on the rapidity and centrality dependence of proton and antiproton transverse mass distributions from 197Au + 197Au collisions at sqrt[sNN ]=130 GeV as measured by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Our results are from the rapidity and transverse momentum range of |y| <0.5 and 0.35< pt <1.00 GeV/c . For both protons and antiprotons, transverse mass distributions become more convex from peripheral to central collisions demonstrating characteristics of collective expansion. The measured rapidity distributions and the mean transverse momenta versus rapidity are flat within |y| <0.5 . Comparisons of our data with results from model calculations indicate that in order to obtain a consistent picture of the proton (antiproton) yields and transverse mass distributions the possibility of prehadronic collective expansion may have to be taken into account

    Correlations in STAR: interferometry and event structure

    STAR observes a complex picture of RHIC collisions where correlation effects of different origins -- initial state geometry, semi-hard scattering, hadronization, as well as final state interactions such as quantum intensity interference -- coexist. Presenting the measurements of flow, mini-jet deformation, modified hadronization, and the Hanbury Brown and Twiss effect, we trace the history of the system from the initial to the final state.     Two position sensitive Shower Maximum Detector (SMDs) for Zero-Degree Calorimeters (ZDCs) were installed by STAR before run 2004 at both upstream and downstream from the interaction point along the beam axis where particles with small rigidity are swept away by strong magnetic field. The ZDC-SMDs provides information about neutral energy deposition as a function of transverse position in ZDCs. We report the preliminary results of strangelet search from a triggered data-set sampling 100 million Au+Au collisions at top RHIC energy.Comment: Strange Quark Matter 2004 conference proceedin

    Longitudinal double-spin asymmetry and cross section for inclusive jet production in polarized proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV

    We report a measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A_LL and the differential cross section for inclusive midrapidity jet production in polarized proton collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV. The cross section data cover transverse momenta 5 < pT < 50 GeV/c and agree with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD evaluations.     Identified baryon and meson distributions at large transverse momenta from Au+Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 200 GeV

    Transverse momentum spectra of π±\pi^{\pm}, pp and pˉ\bar{p} up to 12 GeV/c at mid-rapidity in centrality selected Au+Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = 200 GeV are presented. In central Au+Au collisions, both π±\pi^{\pm} and p(pˉ)p(\bar{p}) show significant suppression with respect to binary scaling at pT>p_T > 4 GeV/c. Protons and anti-protons are less suppressed than π±\pi^{\pm}, in the range 1.5 <pT<< p_{T} <6 GeV/c. The π/π+\pi^-/\pi^+ and pˉ/p\bar{p}/p ratios show at most a weak pTp_T dependence and no significant centrality dependence. The p/πp/\pi ratios in central Au+Au collisions approach the values in p+p and d+Au collisions at pT>p_T > 5 GeV/c. The results at high pTp_T indicate that the partonic sources of π±\pi^{\pm}, pp and pˉ\bar{p} have similar energy loss when traversing the nuclear medium.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Azimuthally sensitive Hanbury Brown-Twiss interferometry in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_{NN}) = 200 GeV

    We present the results of a systematic study of the shape of the pion distribution in coordinate space at freeze-out in Au+Au collisions at RHIC using two-pion Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) interferometry. Oscillations of the extracted HBT radii vs. emission angle indicate sources elongated perpendicular to the reaction plane.     Multiplicity and Pseudorapidity Distributions of Charged Particles and Photons at Forward Pseudorapidity in Au + Au Collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 62.4 GeV

    We present the centrality dependent measurement of multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions of charged particles and photons in Au + Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 62.4 GeV. The charged particles and photons are measured in the pseudorapidity region 2.9 < eta < 3.9 and 2.3 < eta < 3.7, respectively. We have studied the scaling of particle production with the number of participating nucleons and the number of binary collisions. The photon and charged particle production in the measured pseudorapidity range has been shown to be consistent with energy independent limiting fragmentation behavior. The photons are observed to follow a centrality independent limiting fragmentation behavior while for the charged particles it is centrality dependent. We have carried out a comparative study of the pseudorapidity distributions of positively charged hadrons, negatively charged hadrons, photons, pions, net protons in nucleus--nucleus collisions and pseudorapidity distributions from p+p collisions. From these comparisons we conclude that baryons in the inclusive charged particle distribution are responsible for the observed centrality dependence of limiting fragmentation. The mesons are found to follow an energy independent behavior of limiting fragmentation while the behavior of baryons seems to be energy dependent.Comment: 17 pages and 20 figure

    Longitudinal double-spin asymmetry for inclusive jet production in p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV

    We report a new STAR measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A_LL for inclusive jet production at mid-rapidity in polarized p+p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 200 GeV. The data, which cover jet transverse momenta 5 < p_T < 30 GeV/c, are substantially more precise than previous measurements.     Measurements of ϕ\phi meson production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC

    We present results for the measurement of ϕ\phi meson production via its charged kaon decay channel ϕK+K\phi \to K^+K^- in Au+Au collisions at sNN=62.4\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4, 130, and 200 GeV, and in p+pp+p and dd+Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV from the STAR experiment at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The midrapidity (y<0.5|y|<0.5) ϕ\phi meson transverse momentum (pTp_{T}) spectra in central Au+Au collisions are found to be well described by a single exponential distribution. On the other hand, the pTp_{T} spectra from p+pp+p, dd+Au and peripheral Au+Au collisions show power-law tails at intermediate and high pTp_{T} and are described better by Levy distributions. The constant ϕ/K\phi/K^- yield ratio vs beam species, collision centrality and colliding energy is in contradiction with expectations from models having kaon coalescence as the dominant mechanism for ϕ\phi production at RHIC. The Ω/ϕ\Omega/\phi yield ratio as a function of pTp_{T} is consistent with a model based on the recombination of thermal ss quarks up to pT4p_{T}\sim 4 GeV/cc, but disagrees at higher transverse momenta. The measured nuclear modification factor, RdAuR_{dAu}, for the ϕ\phi meson increases above unity at intermediate pTp_{T}, similar to that for pions and protons, while RAAR_{AA} is suppressed due to the energy loss effect in central Au+Au collisions. Number of constituent quark scaling of both RcpR_{cp} and v2v_{2} for the ϕ\phi meson with respect to other hadrons in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV at intermediate pTp_{T} is observed. These observations support quark coalescence as being the dominant mechanism of hadronization in the intermediate pTp_{T} region at RHIC.Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, 4 table

    Longitudinal Spin Transfer to Λ\Lambda and Λˉ\bar{\Lambda} Hyperons in Polarized Proton-Proton Collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV

    The longitudinal spin transfer, DLLD_{LL}, from high energy polarized protons to Λ\Lambda and Λˉ\bar{\Lambda} hyperons has been measured for the first time in proton-proton collisions at s=200GeV\sqrt{s} = 200 \mathrm{GeV} with the STAR detector at RHIC. The measurements cover pseudorapidity, η\eta, in the range η<1.2|\eta| < 1.2 and transverse momenta, pTp_\mathrm{T}, up to 4GeV/c4 \mathrm{GeV}/c. The longitudinal spin transfer is found to be DLL=0.03±0.13(stat)±0.04(syst)D_{LL}= -0.03\pm 0.13(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.04(\mathrm{syst}) for inclusive Λ\Lambda and DLL=0.12±0.08(stat)±0.03(syst)D_{LL} = -0.12 \pm 0.08(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.03(\mathrm{syst}) for inclusive Λˉ\bar{\Lambda} hyperons with =0.5 = 0.5 and =3.7GeV/c = 3.7 \mathrm{GeV}/c.
